At Howl we specialise in journeying skills, the Bushcraft we practice and teach is that of the traveler. There is a wonderful simplicity that comes from taking a trip in the outdoors, a pragmatism gleaned from necessity. We draw from this experience in the field to teach a set of skills and knowledge based in expedience and realism, skills that actually get used while outdoors. We provide an insight into the Natural world, opening up a vast array of natural resources and knowledge to help you travel with less reliance on the contents of your rucksack: it’s what you carry in your mind that matters.

We teach these practical skills in a friendly and open way, our hope being to enable you to make your adventures into the Great Outdoors memorable and enjoyable. We'll help you cultivate a positive attitude, a confidence in yourself, and a connection with the natural world through which you travel.

We promote the utmost respect for the environment, the ability to pass unnoticed through the woods brings with it a deeper understanding of the wilderness, and our part in it. It is this philosophy which forms the very core of our work.

Howl's Firesteel - Limited Edition

£20.00

The most reliable means of producing fire outdoors.

Our limited edition Ash handled FireSteel is handmade at Howl HQ using the finest Ferro rods on the market, the very same as the StrikeFire brand we sell and the only ones we trust to use on our expeds and courses.

Furnished with a hand-carved Ash handle, the faceted profile is given a high texture for a positive grip for the cold and wet and is sealed with linseed oil. Fitted into the handle is a quick release pin to make securing your steel easy after lighting your fire, minimising the risk of losing this vital piece of kit. The firesteel comes on a lanyard of high spec blue 550 paracord for securing to your belt with a Larks Head Knot.

Our firesteel does not come with a striker, we recommend using the spine of a knife to drive sparks from the firesteel.

“I typically only get chance to make these Firesteel’s once a year, in this batch I have 12 and I’m not sure when I’ll be able to make a new batch.

The StrikeFire Firesteel is the model we use on all our courses, and one I personally carry on every excursion we undertake to rely on everyday. The difference I've found between cheap versions and quality ferrocerium comes down to those crucial moments, where you need to drive strong large sparks into marginal tinder after a day or two of rain. A good firesteel will allow you to easily peel shavings off the end of the rod without igniting, and is volatile enough to use with cold hands using gross motor muscles to start your fire. That, ultimately is why I use StrikeFire.” - Jamie Dakota

In this quick slide show I'd demonstrate the typical way I use a pocket knife and a firesteel to prepare birch bark for fire lighting.
