"I spent months looking the perfect fabric for these bandanas. I had some very specific requirements as I always have a bandana in my rucksack or around my neck as they're particularly versatile items. I wanted it to be tougher than the typical shemagh fabric, as I'm often using the bandana to lift hot pans from the fire, making impromptu water filters and carrying foraged items in them. I also carry these garments as emergency wound dressings, slings and towels so they had to be highly absorbent. I tested a vast array of fabrics in the search for this combination of properties, and happened upon a company in the UK supplying a cotton/nettle blend fabric by accident. I couldn't believe my luck! I'd known the German army made uniforms from nettle fibre in wartime, and that those uniforms had been durable but I wasn't expecting the fabric I received: a lightweight and tough material that settled after a week into a soft and flowing fabric that ticked all my boxes.
Nettle fibre is naturally highly resistant to odor, mildew, mould and bacteria making it ideal for a neck scarf or towel. In using it as a towel it also needed to be fast drying, a feature of an open weave without being so open as to weaken the fabric. It also needs to be easily cleaned in the field, nettle fibre is naturally stain resistant and along with cotton can be boiled in a billy can when camping to clean and sterilse the fabric, not something that can be done with cheaper polycotton shemaghs."
